In memory of Detective John Hampton Coddou III: On the morning of April 23, 2024, Detective Coddou was struck and killed while responding to a crash on the Grand Parkway near Cumberland Ridge Drive. With his emergency lights activated, he was parked on the center median when a truck swerved to avoid his patrol vehicle and tragically struck him. He was transported by Life Flight to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
At the time of his death, Detective Coddou was serving with honor in the Violent Crimes Unit. His pursuit of justice, tireless work ethic, and unwavering dedication to protecting others left a lasting impact on the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the community he served. His sacrifice is formally recognized under the Texas Government Code, Chapter 615.
Detective Coddou is survived by his loving wife and mother. Their loss—and ours—is profound and deeply felt.
We continue to mourn, remember, and celebrate the life of a devoted public servant. Detective Coddou’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the cases he pursued, and the brothers and sisters in law enforcement who carry his memory forward with pride.
Gone but never forgotten.
